Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
