Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
