They're Doing across America What They Executed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive occasions – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of multiple weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the eastern section to erect it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of deaths from his cuts to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have attempted – really, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

We went from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the president try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have observed over the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of affection into a figure of hostility who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground

Therefore allow me to outline the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness of him as they consider themselves non-believers or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably not the narrative of a powerful ruler arising; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to violence is to turn the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a way to instruct the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing is that if an individual takes your jacket you ought to provide the person your additional clothing also.

The obvious and direct reality that the Savior in biblical accounts advocates for a kind of radical love centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality demanding to be controlled. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestantism was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Finest Within Us

Hence I have become inspired to see the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to help build the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags during all protests and calls to the highest qualities of American history.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or reject?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it imply acting as if the worst of both America and Christian faith never occurred; it represents both humility and belief, a blend that serious national faithful ought to accept.
